Kelly Rowland in 2012

Kelly Rowland is mostly known in present as an RNB singer, but she is also an actress and a dancer and she is involved in television (mainly because of her singing skills). Her full name is Kelendria Trene Rowlands and she was born on February 11, 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America, but grew up in Houston. Her mother broke up with her father when she was seven and they moved in the town in which she grew up. In Houston, she befriended Beyonce Knowles and LaTavia Roberson with whom she formed a rapping and dancing group which in time evolved to be Destiny’s Child thanks to the work and involvement of Beyonce’s dad, Mathew Knowles. In 1997, after four years on the road, the group signed a deal with Columbia Records and the same year Destiny’s Child released a debut album.

After a few years in which the members of the band constantly changed, Kelly remained a part of Destiny’s Child together with Beyonce and Michelle Williams. After a huge success and Grammy wins with the group, Kelly recorded a track with Nelly, named Dilemma, which became one of the most successful singles of 2002. Listen it here.

After this, Rowland rushed with her first single album and released it in early 2003, three weeks earlier than scheduled, because of the positive critics Dilemma received. It was named Simply Deep and catapulted her into stardom, making her leave the shadow of Beyonce Knowles. In November 2004, Destiny’s Child released their last album, named Destiny Fulfilled, after which they started a tour in which they announced the disbandment of the group. However, in October 2005, an album named #1′s was released and included the biggest successes of Destiny’s Child: Independent Women, Survivor, Say My Name, Emotion, Bootylicious, Cater 2 U.

In 2007, Kelly Rowland released Ms. Kelly, but unfortunately this album was not that successful like her first. In 2009 however, she had two successful collaborations, with Tiziano Ferro on Breathe Gentle and with David Guetta on When Love Takes Over. One year later, she released Here I Am, her third album, which also failed to impress. However, in 2011 she released a new song with Lil Wayne, called Motivation. It is her most successful until present and it peaked at number 17 in Billboard Hot 100. Listen it bellow.

In the spring of 2012 she was supposed to release a new album, but nothing happened and the album is still expected by her fans, who hope the fourth album of the singer will be the best she released until now.

If you want to get a taste of contemporary RnB, then you must listen to the songs of Jessie J. Born Jessica Cornish on March 27, 1988, the English singer and songwriter was raised in London, where she studied at the BRIT School. She then signed with Gut Records and stroke a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, where she started writing songs for various artists, including pop sensation Miley Cyrus and Chris Brown.

Later on, Jessie J signed with Universal and released her debut single, Do It Like a Dude, which peaked at number 2 on the UK Singles Charts. Following this success, Jessie J released the single Price Tag (featuring B.o.B.), which was an international hit and topped the charts in 19 countries, including the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland, and France. Her success was phenomenal, which led to the release of her debut album, Who You Are (2011). Below you can watch the video for Price Tag.

From the album Who You Are, Jessie J released several other hits, including Nobody’s Perfect, Who’s Laughing Now, and Who You Are, which all charted within the top 20 in the UK. Her songs were very popular because people (especially the youth) could relate to them. They all spoke about love, hate, betrayal, and all the other problems people face. The artist revealed that Who You Are is one of her proudest creations, because the song is a “positive role model for young people“. “I always say that I’m half artist, half therapist”, the brunette added.

The release of the fifth single from Who You Are, Domino, spawned more international chart success, peaking at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and becoming number one in the United Kingdom once again. With the release of LaserLight (featuring David Guetta), Jessie J became the first British female artist to have six top 10 singles on one album. This is pretty rare, since most artists only release a couple of singles from an album.

Future plans for Jessie J include the release of a yet untitled sophomoric album sometime in 2013. Meanwhile, she serves as a coach and mentor on the popular TV show The Voice UK.

With over 11 million singles and 2.5 million albums sold worldwide as of April 2012, Jessie J is clearly one of the most successful artists of her generation.
