If you want to talk about RNB legends, then mentioning the name of Ray Charles is surely worth it. Ray Charles was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950s by fusing RNB, gospel and blues styles into his early recordings. Ray Charles also helped racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his Modern Sounds RNB albums.
The main influences upon his music were mainly jazz, blues, RNB, and country artists such as Art Tatum, Nat King Cole, Charles Brown and Louis Armstrong. His playing reflected influences from country blues, barrelhouse and stride piano styles. This fusion of various musical styles is just what makes Ray Charles such an iconic figure in the RNB musical industry. Billy Joel once said that he was the first artist to mix and mingle and made things work. Ray Charles possessed one of the most recognisable voices in the American RNB music.
Due to his extensive RNB career, Ray Charles was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, and in 1991 he was introduced to the RNB Foundation. On December 2007, Ray Charles Plaza was opened in Albany, Georgia, in honouring memory of this wonderful RNB artist. In the middle of the plaza, there is a revolving, lighted bronze sculpture of ray Charles seated at a piano. The same year, Ray Charles was presented with the Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement.
Ray Charles was a very influential RNB artist that had beneficial effects on many of the important artist of today. Despite his vision impairment, Ray Charles had amazing musical gifts that he may have never touched upon if he had not suffered from this physical affection. This did not not prevent him from having a normal life and a successful career. He was married twice and had 12 children, 20 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Among his many talents, Ray Charles was the first to have combined RNB and gospel and created a new beautiful and unique musical genre.
